He Was Experimental on By the Government and Deformed

Vertus Wellborn Hardiman was the victim of an unethical secret U.S. government radiation experiment in 1928. Hardiman was born on March 9, 1922, in Lyles Station, Ind., known as one of the earliest Negro settlements in the United States. When Hardiman was five years old, he was one of nine children who took part in a terrifying medical experiment, where he and other children were severely irradiated during a medical experiment conducted at the local county hospital. The experiment was misrepresented as a new therapy for the scalp fungus known as ringworm to get parental consent. The radiation of the skull led to immediate symptoms but also to severe progressive necrosis of the bone all through his life.

At the time, many human radiation experiments were conducted on African Americans and were funded by the United States Department of Defense and the United States Atomic Energy Commission. Experiments included feeding radioactive food to disabled children, inserting radium rods into school children, and injecting pregnant women and babies with radioactive chemicals. The studies were classified until 1986 when they were released in the report entitled “America Nuclear Guinea Pigs: Three Decades of Radiation Experiments.” The treatment of Hardiman’s skull left him with progressive necrosis of the scalp throughout the rest of his life. The disfigurement of his head was so severe that he always wore hats and wigs to disguise his scalp. Hardiman faced intense criticism from friends who had no idea what he was hiding, and for nearly 80 years he kept his disfigurement secret from the public.

Despite his obstacles, he graduated from Lincoln High School with honors in 1941. In 1945, Hardiman traveled to the West Coast for a job. After a year, he gained employment with the Los Angeles County General Hospital, where he was known as a loyal employee and was honored for his perfect attendance record. Hardiman died at age 85. The life of Vertus Hardiman is the subject of the documentary “Hole in the Head: A Life Revealed.” released in 2011 which was written and produced by Wilbert Smith and directed by Brett Leonard. These types of experiments led to a distrust of the medical community among African Americans. A distrust that lingers on today.

Supernatural Changes to Scripture

You often hear people who say that scripture is being supernatural changed refer to Amos 8:11.  They believe this scripture is evidence of scripture being supernaturally changed.  They say this famine is being caused by the devil systematically taking away words and changing familiar passages of scripture such as the Lion and the Lamb from Isaiah 11:6-9, rather than the wolf and the lamb shall lie down together.  Most people see this as a minor case of misremembering scripture, but proponents of the belief in supernatural changes believe that the scriptures are being supernaturally changed by mysterious external forces such as CERN and other scientific anomalies.  This belief, although not biblical, is held religiously by most of these new Bible critics.  Some have even gone so far as to call the Bible an idol since Jesus is the living word rather than words on pages.  What was Amos talking about in chapter 8? To gain deeper insight into a challenging messa...

Was the woman at the well disqualified from discipleship?

During our morning conversation, we delved into the story of the woman at the well as recounted in John 4:1-42. The question that surfaced was whether this woman, who had been married five times previously and was currently living with a man to whom she wasn't wed, could be considered for discipleship. It's a question that would likely be met with skepticism by most religious authorities, but Jesus challenges conventional wisdom. We can't attribute her circumstances to luck, as there's no such thing. Rather, in the context of a world devoid of safety nets for women, her choices may have been pragmatic.  Jesus, displaying his omniscience, encounters her alone at the well, using the opportunity to engage in discipleship. Despite societal norms that marginalize women, Jesus breaks through these barriers by addressing her directly and acknowledging her situation with grace. He redirects the conversation away from religious doctrine to emphasize the importance of a personal ...

Police Say the Lakewood Shooter Identified As a Female with Mental Issues

Commander of Homicide Christopher Hassig clarified, "Our shooter is identified by a driver's license as Genesee Moreno, a 36-year-old Hispanic female. There are some discrepancies. We do have reports she used multiple aliases, including Jeffrey Escalante. So she has utilized both male and female names but through all of our investigation to this point, talking with individuals, interviews, documents, Houston Police Department reports, she has been identified this entire time as female." The police noted that some media outlets had referred to Moreno as a transgender woman, but according to their investigat...
